    Lees-Mcrae College   Located in nearby Banner Elk, Lees-Mcrae College liberal arts programs offer more than 25 majors leading to both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, including Appalachian Studies, Wildlife Rehabilitation, Psychology and Performing Arts Studies.  It is a co-educational, 4-year college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) located on 400 acres at an elevation of 4000'.
    Grandfather Mountain   At 5,964', Grandfather Mountain is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge mountain range.  It is privately owned and operated as a travel attraction and world-wide recognized nature preserve.
    Tweetsie Railroad   1956 Tweetsie Locomotive #12 was purchased fom actor Gene Autry by local native and developer, Grover Robbins.  Robbins had the #12 restored and moved it to the present day site of Tweetsie Railroad, which is a well known attraction and is listed in the National Register of Historic places.
    Appalachian State University   Home of the 3-time defending NCAA Division I national football champions, App State is one of the top five masters degree-granting universities in the South with a student/faculty ratio of 17:1.
